What is a Breast Augmentation with Lift?

Also known as breast augmentation mastopexy (BAM) or breast lift with implants, a breast lift with augmentation is a highly customized procedure designed to address the volume, shape, and position of the breasts to restore a more youthful appearance while simultaneously enhancing contour and fullness. Our double board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Matthew Malamet, performs this procedure by removing loose/excess skin, lifting the breasts and nipple-areola complex to a higher position, and utilizing breast implants to improve breast size and profile.

How is a Breast Lift with Augmentation Performed?

The technique employed for breast lift with augmentation is based upon each patient’s personal aesthetic goals and unique anatomic characteristics, as well as the type and size of the implant to be utilized. To help patients achieve the look they desire, Dr. Malamet will select the best surgical approach/incision locations that are most appropriate for the degree of breast drooping or breast ptosis. Generally, the more significant the degree of breast drooping/sagginess, the greater the amount of skin excision/removal. The surgical approach/incision locations include:

  • Peri-areolar incision – carefully placed at the border of the pigmented/colored areola and adjacent skin. The scar resulting from this incision is usually camouflaged easily within the natural appearance of the nipple-areolar complex.
  • Vertical or Lollipop incision – the “Peri-areolar incision” + an incision that runs vertically down the breast from the base or 6 o’clock position of the areola to the inframammary breast crease.
  • Inverted “J” or “T” incision – the “Vertical or Lollipop incision” + an incision that runs horizontally within the middle portion of the inframammary breast crease. This incision typically results in an inconspicuous scar that blends in with the natural breast crease.
Choosing the appropriate pocket location for breast implant placement/position is a crucial aspect for achieving ideal aesthetic outcomes after breast lift with augmentation. The breast implant pocket is where the implant will be placed and its relationship to the respective pectoralis muscle and mammary gland. The most common location for breast implant placement is subpectoral or submuscular, either completely or partially under the chest muscle (also known as the “dual plane approach”). This location tends to provide a more natural appearance, provides adequate soft tissue coverage, and helps reduce the chances of rippling, especially in women with smaller frames. In some cases, Dr. Malamet may suggest placing the implants in the subglandular position, or between the chest muscle and mammary gland. However, this is relatively rare. During your consultation, he will discuss your options with you and help you select the appropriate location for implant placement that will provide you with the best possible aesthetic outcome.

How Long is Recovery After a Breast Lift with Augmentation?

After breast lift with augmentation surgery, patients may experience some swelling and bruising, but these effects will subside over time. Any discomfort after surgery is typically mild to moderate and controlled well with prescription pain medications. To encourage proper healing, Dr. Malamet will provide you with personalized aftercare/postoperative instructions. Dr. Malamet encourages patients to try to move around shortly after returning home, but any strenuous activity should be avoided for approximately four to eight weeks; unique to each patient’s individual case. It is extremely important to take the time to allow your body to heal after surgery, but most patients are able to return to work, school, or other regular non high-impact activities after approximately two weeks.

You will have several follow-up appointments after surgery to monitor the progress of your healing. However, if any issues should arise during the postoperative recovery period, please contact our office as soon as possible to be seen by Dr. Malamet.

Resulting scars will depend upon the incision location/approach utilized, but Dr. Malamet takes great care to carefully place incisions in a way that enables them to be easily hidden, once healed.

However, this average only includes the surgeon’s fee, and does not take into consideration other variables that can potentially affect the overall cost of a breast lift with augmentation, such as breast implant selection, surgical technique, hospital/surgical facility fees, anesthesia fees, prescribed medications and more.
