What is a Facelift?
The features of your face are what make you unique, but as we age, facial lines and folds threaten to diminish natural beauty. A facelift is designed to rid your face of unwanted lines and folds while accentuating your natural features, giving you a rejuvenated appearance.
Known technically as a Rhytidectomy, a facelift is designed to eliminate various signs of aging through the removal of excess fat and skin from your face, enabling a skilled plastic surgeon such as Matthew Malamet, MD to sculpt a natural, aesthetic appearance via a customized treatment plan created with your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals in mind.
Facelift results are long-term; a clear advantage over the temporary benefits of injectable fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, VOLUMA®, and VOLBELLA®, as well as neurotoxins like BOTOX Cosmetic® and Dysport®. Typical facelift patients are between 40 and 80 years old, but there are no specific age restrictions for this procedure. Results can range from subtle to dramatic, depending on the patient, as well as their needs and desires.
What is a “Mini” / “Short Scar” Facelift?
Designed to address facial aging in the lower two-thirds of the face/lower jawline/jowl, a “Mini” / “Short Scar” facelift is not as thorough as a full facelift and can result in less scarring.
Am I a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?
Typical facelift candidates include women and men seeking reduction or elimination of common signs of facial aging such as loose/sagging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines. Although there are no distinct age limitations for this facial rejuvenation surgery, most facelift patients are between the ages of 40 and 80. Rather than age, a patient’s overall health is more important when determining candidacy for this procedure. In your consultation with Dr. Malamet, he will conduct a thorough examination, as well as ask you about your individual concerns and expectations. Ultimately, this information helps determine if this procedure is appropriate and safe for you. If you are not a good candidate for facelift surgery, Dr. Malamet can recommend an alternative treatment to best address your concerns.
How is a Facelift Performed?
During facelift surgery, the skin and underlying tissues in the face and neck area are carefully and skillfully tightened and/or contoured for a natural, yet revitalized appearance. Dr. Malamet customizes treatment for each patient, and can combine other procedures such as a brow lift, eyelid lift, fat grafting, liposuction, chemical peel, or laser treatment for a more comprehensive approach, if desired. Facelift surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, but can also be completed under local anesthesia with IV sedation. The length of surgery depends on each patient’s unique treatment plan, but on average, the procedure takes about three to five hours.
What is Facelift Recovery Like?
Following surgery, swelling and bruising in the treatment area can be expected, but these effects should gradually fade over time. Most patients will need to stay overnight after surgery, but can return home the next day, under the care of a registered nurse (R.N.), friend, or family member. Once home, Dr. Malamet advises patients to rest with their head slightly elevated. You may experience some mild discomfort or pain after surgery, but this is generally managed well with medication. Most patients are able to return to work approximately one to three weeks after surgery, although exercise and other strenuous activity should be avoided for about three or four weeks. To ensure ideal results and proper healing, Dr. Malamet will provide you with more specific and personalized aftercare instructions.
How Much Does Facelift Surgery Cost?
Due to the highly customized nature of a facelift, the price can vary from patient to patient. However, recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) note that the average surgeon’s fee for facelift surgery is roughly $7,500*. Other factors that can affect the cost of facelift surgery include:
- The specific technique employed
- The extent of concerns being addressed
- Hospital/Operating Room and anesthesia fees
- Pre- and post-op medications
- The surgeon’s experience, training, and skill
- Geographic location of the practice
- Complementary procedures (e.g., neck lift, eyelid lift, brow lift, fat grafting, or a chemical peel)
