Commonly known as ear surgery, otoplasty is a procedure designed to correct protruding or disfigured ears for both adults and children. Protruding and disfigured ears can often lead to children that face ridicule and adults that suffer from insecurities. Otoplasty is designed to create a more natural and balanced appearance to the ears that can translate into improved self-esteem and self-confidence. Dr. Matthew Malamet—our board-certified plastic surgeon—perform otoplasty to correctly overly large ears, protruding ears, large or stretched earlobes, lobes with wrinkles and creases, lop ear, cupped ear, and shell ear. Regardless of the deformity, Dr. Malamet performs otoplasty to improve the appearance of the ear and positively impact self-esteem and self-confidence.
The Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Procedure
Depending on the amount of correction necessary and the potential level of discomfort for the patient, local or general anesthesia may be necessary during an otoplasty procedure. Dr. Malamet will help to determine which option will maximize patient comfort during an initial consultation.
While in some cases an incision may be made on the front of the ear, most otoplasty procedures involve small incisions behind the ear to minimize visible scarring. If an incision is made on the front of the ear, Dr. Malamet hides them in the natural folds and creases of the ear. The number of incisions and incision locations will also depend upon how much correction is necessary. Once the incision(s) is made, the cartilage of the ear is reshaped to match the desired contour of the ear. Once the desired result has been achieved, the cartilage is secured in place with non-removable and internal sutures.
