Go Batty for Halloween

There are certain things that are universally admired. Long, thick eyelashes would be one of them. Unfortunately, many of us are born with less than the eyelashes we’d like to have. Plus, years of plucking and applying mascara have thinned them out even more.

So, we apply mascara, eyeliner, maybe even false eyelashes, but those are ephemeral solutions. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to click your fingers and grow longer, thicker eyelashes on your own?

You can come with Latisse from Dr. Malamet. Latisse is the first and only FDA-approved prescription treatment for growing longer, fuller, darker eyelashes.

How does Latisse work?

This sounds like the stuff of late night infomercials. Remember, “spray on hair”? But Latisse is the real deal, hence the FDA approval. It grows out and thickens your eyelashes.

The discovery of Latisse was accidental. Allergan was working on an eyedrop to relieve intraocular pressure in the eye, the cause of glaucoma. Those in the test had an interesting effect. When they applied the eyedrops, some of the liquid made its way onto the eyelids and the eyelashes, and their eyelashes grew. As a result, Allergan began research into the active agent in the eyedrops, bimatoprost, specifically for growing eyelashes. It proved effective, and the FDA approved it in December 2008. It is believed that the bimatoprost increases the anagen phase (that’s the growth phase) of the eyelashes.

Here’s how it works. Dr. Malamet provides a prescription for Latisse, and you take it home. You apply Latisse nightly on the upper lash, just like eyeliner. The bimatoprost in Latisse stimulates the lashes to grow. The treatment works gradually, and your eyelashes will experience real growth over time, generally 12 to 16 weeks. But this is a treatment that demands consistency. You must stay with it — once you start the treatment, the topical solution must be applied continuously each night until you achieve the desired results.

True results

When Latisse was tested, it was shown effective in 78% of the participants at the end of the 16-week test period. Specifically, patients using Latisse experienced a:
