It’s always interesting to see what procedures are the most popular in the aesthetic world. Sometimes Dr. Malamet’s patients ask as to which procedure is more popular this year and other similar questions.
Every year the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) compiles statistics from the previous year. Here are the numbers from last year. As you would expect, demand for aesthetic procedures continues to grow, with a 9% increase in surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures in 2016.
Here are highlights of the ISAPS statistics.
Who has the most procedures?
It’s an interesting phenomenon, but five countries account for over 41% of the world’s cosmetic procedures: USA, Brazil, Japan, Italy, and Mexico, while some countries such as Sweden and Norway don’t even make it into the top 25.
Here are the top 10 countries, with the number of procedures:
- USA — 4,217862, 17.9%
- Brazil — 2,524,115, 10.7%

- Germany — 730,437, 3.1%
- France — 517,731, 2.2%
What’s the most popular procedure?
Breast augmentation was once again the world’s most popular cosmetic surgery, accounting for 15.8% of all surgical procedures. Liposuction was second at 14% of all procedures, eyelid surgery third (12.9%), nose surgery (7.6%), and tummy tucks (7.4%).
On the non-surgical side, it’s no contest. Botox and other botulinum toxin brands were injected 4,627,752 times, a 7% increase over 2015.
What’s the fastest growing procedure?
Labiaplasty increased 45% over 2015 numbers. Next fastest growing were lower body lifts, upper body lifts, breast augmentation with fat transfer, and the butt lift.
What’s the difference between the sexes?
Women accounted for 86.2%, or 20,362,655 cosmetic procedures worldwide. For women, the five most popular procedures were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and breast lift.
Men accounted for 13.8% of cosmetic procedures, 3,264,254 procedures. For men, the top five were eyelid surgery, gynecomastia, nose surgery, liposuction, and hair transplants.
